SIDE B

FEVER DREAM

Production on the second season of Twin Peaks began in mid-July, 1990, as David Lynch and Mark Frost plotted the series’ path into the future. Network politics and a media circus raged on as the impending demands of a twenty-two episode order required the generation of new and engaging content - all while sustaining the extolled caliber of the first season.

Mark Frost: Season two - by virtue of having all those episodes in front of us - had to be launched more like a traditional show than season one. We had written all episodes of season one before we started shooting, or at least certainly had them laid out. With season two we had to go back to the starting line, start from scratch, write stories, and get going quickly. So we didn’t have the same amount of thinking time and felt the pressure of knowing we had to make that many shows and having to generate that many stories. David wasn’t around as much because of Wild at Heart, so he and I didn’t have each other to rely on quite as much, so it was just a different vibe.

Harley Peyton: The second season wasn’t something I was thinking about a lot [during the first season]. I hoped there would be a second season, but I had never worked on a television show so it was all new to me! Then the second season came along and they made me a producer which thrilled me and spoiled me forever. It was an interesting balancing act in the second season and it had some highs and lows, but I certainly remember it fondly.
